MESA, Ariz. — A 23-year-old Louisiana man died after being attacked by bees Thursday morning as he and a friend were hiking Usery Mountain Park, according to The Arizona Republic.

A medical examination determined that the man, Alex Bestler, had been stung by more than 1,000 bees.

According to the incident report, Bestler’s hiking partner was able to make it to shelter during the attack, but he was overtaken by the massive swarm before he could find shelter.

Two firefighters, a sheriff’s office sergeant, park employees and the other hiker were able to move Bestler into a utility-terrain vehicle, where he was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
