BURLINGTON, N.C. -- A taxi cab slammed into a home Wednesday morning in Burlington and the driver was thrown from the car and trapped beneath rubble.

Burlington police spokesman Chris Verdeck confirmed to FOX8 that the driver has died. Officials say the driver was the only person inside the taxi.

There is speculation that the driver may have had a heart attack or other medical issue that may have caused the crash, but that remains under investigation.

The crash happened at 6:16 a.m. at Maple Avenue and Anthony Street.

Passersby can see directly into the living room of the home. A chunk of the roof now sits in the front yard.

A woman home at the time was not injured. She told FOX8 she awoke to a loud boom and the car smoking in her living room. She said the car is sitting where her sofa usually sits. She is grateful she decided to sleep in her bed last night instead of the couch, which now lies in the front yard.

Burlington city officials have condemned the home, saying it is not suitable to live in.
