Lockdown lifted at Winston-Salem high school after bear sighting

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Carver High School in Winston-Salem was placed on precautionary lockdown after a bear was seen in the area Friday.

The bear was spotted about 12:15 p.m. on Tracy Street between the Carver High bus lot and the school.

Winston-Salem police officers and wildlife officers responded and attempted to locate the bear but lost sight of it, police said in a news release.

The sighting is the latest in a series of bear sightings.

On Thursday, a bear was spotted in Oak Ridge. The previous week a bear was seen on an elementary school campus in King. Three more bears were spotted near the Sheetz in King, which is about a mile from the elementary school.

Also that week, two bears were spotted in the Westover Terrace and Wendover Avenue area of Greensboro.
