CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 6-year-old boy is in the hospital with a severe head injury after being hit by a baseball at a Charlotte Knights game Sunday, WSOC reported.

Six-year-old James David was sitting in the BB&T Ballpark stands near third base when a foul ball struck him.

His family told WBTV James suffered a skull fracture and a bad concussion. He has bleeding on both sides of his brain.

“Immediately, just the speed of the ball hitting his head, I knew it wasn’t going to be good,” his mother Kristy David told WBTV.

The team had recently installed extra-protective netting, but the boy and his family were not sitting behind it.

Knights officials weren’t required to do so but spent $10,000 to install the net with an extra 10 feet after fans had left other ballparks with game-related injuries, according to WTVD.
