NC man accused of killing mother, injuring boy arrested in Ohio

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A North Carolina man accused of shooting and killing a mother and critically injuring her 3-year-old son has been arrested in Ohio.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that Nathaniel Elijah Dixon, 24, of Asheville, is accused of killing 22-year-old Candace Elaine Pickens and injuring her son Zachaeus Latese Waters.

A jogger found the victims in a park near an elementary school in Asheville at about 6 a.m. Thursday. The mother was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was fatally shot in the face and the boy was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville in critical condition, according to the paper.

The suspect allegedly fled to Columbus Ohio early Friday morning where he was arrested. He is awaiting extradition.

Authorities have not said how the suspect may have known the victims or what a motive in the crime may be.

Dixon has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
