Elderly woman found dead in Mount Airy home; break-in and assault suspected

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- An elderly woman was found dead inside her Mount Airy home Wednesday.

Officers with the Mount Airy Police Department responded to a home located at 409 Franklin St. in reference to a welfare check, according to a release.

Officials said the home looked as though it had been broken into and the victim's body showed signs of assault.

The victim's vehicle was found abandoned on the side on Interstate 77, near mile marker 99 in Surry County.

Authorities have not released the victim's name.

The Surry County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating.
