PINEVILLE, N.C. — The funeral for a fallen Pineville volunteer firefighter is scheduled for Saturday, according to WSOC.

Richard Sheltra, 20, died April 30 while battling a 3-alarm fire at a shopping center in Pineville. The fire was caused by a lightning strike.

Firefighters from agencies around the area are now wearing a black band over their badges in memory of Sheltra. Other departments are manning the Pineville station so firefighters there can grieve the loss of one of their own.

The fire marshal told WSOC that Sheltra’s death was a result of inhalation of products of combustion.

Sheltra’s funeral will be held at Forest Hill Church in SouthPark.
