LEXINGTON, N.C. — A Davidson County man is facing charges after his girlfriend’s 3-year-old was killed in a wreck over the weekend.

Pedro Cuanas, 27, is charged with driving while under the influence.

The wreck happened at 2:45 a.m. Sunday  on Interstate 85 near N.C. 47, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Cuanas, the driver of a 2004 Nissan passenger vehicle, told officials he fell asleep at the wheel, then collided with a 2012 Chevy pickup.

Cuanas had four passengers in his vehicle, one of which was 3-year-old Alexa Augilar, who died at the scene.

The three other passengers, who weren’t wearing their seatbelts, were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Health for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither of the drivers were injured.

According to Trooper Nathan Teague, authorities are conferring with the District Attorney on additional charges for Cuanas.
