DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A 3-year-old girl died in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 85 in Davidson County on Sunday morning.

The accident happened at 2:45 a.m. Sunday on I-85 near N.C. 47, North Carolina Highway Patrol spokeswoman Pam Kearns told the Lexington Dispatch.

Alexa Augilar, 3, died at the scene, Kearns said.

The vehicle Alexa was in was driven by her mother’s boyfriend, 27-year-old Pedro Cuanas, of Lexington. Family members told the Dispatch Cuanas was like a stepfather to Alexa.

Kearns said Cuanas told troopers he fell asleep at the wheel. Impairment by Cuanas is not suspected.

A vehicle driven by Michael Watkins, 59, of Greensboro, struck Cuanas’ vehicle in the rear.

Three other passengers in Cuanas’ vehicle were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cuanas and Watkins were not injured.

Family members told the Dispatch the family was returning from a party in Salisbury.

On Saturday, family members attended Alexa’s baptism at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Lexington.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing and charges are pending.
