WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel officially opened in downtown Winston-Salem today.

The hotel is in the renovated historic RJ Reynolds Building.

For more than 85 years, it’s stood like a fortress in downtown Winston-Salem. Some have called it the city’s architectural signature. When the RJ Reynolds Building opened in April of 1929, it was the tallest building in North Carolina. It was also the tallest between Baltimore and Miami.

Wednesday's ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony are on the same day the RJ Reynolds Building originally opened in 1929.

This hotel has 174 guest rooms, including 15 suites.

It also has a fitness center, an adult recreation room and a restaurant.
