RALEIGH, N.C. — A Meredith College student has taken the Internet by storm with her debt-themed graduation photos.

Maigan Kennedy, who is a senior at Meredith College in Raleigh, told BuzzFeed her “drowning in debt” photos were inspired by the movie “American Beauty.”

Kennedy told BuzzFeed she thought it would be funny to re-enact the scene where Mena Suvari is covered in roses. Kennedy’s photographer with Areon Multimedia decided to cover her in bills instead of roses to poke fun at academia.

In addition to the photo of her surrounded by bills stamped “overdue,” Kennedy also had a photo taken of her holding up a tiny trophy with “debt” written on the front.

“I just wanted to make a joke out of it and I think debt is part of the American college experience,” she told WTVD. “It’s certainly part of my experience and I wanted to laugh at it and I wanted other people to laugh with me.”

Kennedy said a lot of people get it, but others have complained that she is politicizing student loan debt and complaining that she won’t be able to pay the debt with her degree.

She told WTVD that although it will take her years to pay off her student loan debt, she will be happy working in theater.
