GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Highway Patrol has identified the man who was killed on Tuesday in an accident on Oak Ridge Road.

The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. in the front yard of the Moravia Moravian Church.

A 2015 Acura four-door passenger vehicle was traveling east and traveled off the roadway for an unknown reason and struck a large tree and church sign, according to Master Trooper Chris Knox

Knox said Charles Trenton O’Connell, 39, of Oak Ridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the collision, Knox said, but an exact speed estimate is still under investigation.

It is unknown if distractions or alcohol were factors in the collision, Knox said. Initial indications are that O’Connell was wearing a seatbelt.

Knox told the Greensboro News & Record, “This is the most damaged car I’ve seen in my 15 years.”
