BOONE, N.C. — Police say a retired North Carolina State Trooper died in Monday afternoon’s plane crash near Boone Golf Club.
Ben Chappell, 69, of Boone, was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his injuries, according to Sergeant Shane Robbins. Chappell was a retired state trooper of the North Carolina State North Carolin State Highway Patrol.
The two other people involved in the plane crash, 68-year-olf John Field Worsley II and 43-year-old Steven Cox Berry, were critically injured and rushed to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Robbins said in a release that the Federal Aviation Administration has been on the scene since Monday afternoon. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to being their investigation Tuesday morning.
