SNEADS FERRY, N.C. — A longtime Stokes County educator was killed when he was hit by a military vehicle while riding his motorcycle.

Thomas Eugene Martin, 68, of Sneads Ferry, died in the crash on Monday just after 4 p.m. on N.C. 210 in Sneads Ferry, according to WCTI.

Martin served as a teacher and principal in the Stokes County Schools system for several years, FOX8’s Chad Tucker confirmed. Martin and his wife Marie retired to Onslow County in 1999.

Highway Patrol told WCTI the military vehicle crossed the center line while trying to avoid traffic that had stopped suddenly and hit Martin’s motorcycle.

The driver of the military vehicle, Camp Lejeune Marine Steven Crane, 21, was charged with one count of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and one count of driving left of center.

Troopers told WCTI speed was not a factor in the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
