MADISON, N.C. -- A 70-year-old man was attacked and robbed in his own home Sunday night, according to Rockingham County sheriff's deputies.
Officials said two women knocked on the door of his Madison home asking to borrow a phone. When he let them in, two other men rushed in, and deputies say the group attacked and robbed the victim of $350.
Nearby neighbors said it's given them a heightened sense of fear.
"Gives me a weird feeling, especially since I live alone," said Margaret Gann.
Gann said her home has been broken into twice in recent years. That, in combination with her husband's passing, has made the 79-year-old weary of staying home alone.
"I was going to stay here, try it last night, and I called my niece and said I'm coming up there," she said. "I've been trying to get out of this fear. Now it's put more fear in me."
Linda Berry, who also lives nearby, said home invasions were already a big concern for her and this only made that more true.
"Home invasions have been my biggest concern now that I live alone, and being on up in age," she said. "It's on my mind a lot."
Deputies have not made any arrests.
