DURHAM, N.C. — A pregnant woman and her unborn child died Friday at Duke Hospital after a tree fell on her minivan last weekend, according to WTVD.

Wendy Rodriguez, 30, and her boyfriend, Luiz Zavala, were sitting inside their minivan outside their apartment complex Saturday when high winds caused a large tree to fall on top of them.

“We were talking,” Zavala told WTVD. “I was singing a song to her when we started to hear the sound and when we turned, the tree was falling on top of us. The last thing that I remember was I felt the tree hit my head and everything went dark.”

Zavala said he was unconscious until he heard his girlfriend screaming for help. According to WTVD, Zavala was able to get out of the van on his own, but firefighters had to cut Rodriguez from the vehicle.

They were both rushed to Duke Hospital for treatment.

Zavala is still recovering, but Rodriguez, who was 21 weeks pregnant, died from cardiac arrest after nearly a week on life support.

“She was a woman who’s a fighter, enthusiastic, a fast learner, hard worker, happy and not only will I remember her that way, but her family members and more than anything, her friends will too,” Zavala said.

Rodriguez leaves behind four children of her own, according to WTVD. Three of them were in her home country of Honduras.
