Decapitated body found in field belongs to inmate who escaped NC jail using toothbrush

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. -- A decapitated body found in Bertie County has been identified as a man who escaped from the Chowan County Jail, according to WTKR.

Kelvin Singleton, 26, escaped from the jail on March 27 by creating a weapon from a toothbrush and forcing a detention officer to release him.

Singleton's partially decomposed body was found in an open field at the edge of a wooded area on April 7.

He was in jail for robbery, kidnapping and assault charges.

At this point, the medical examiner said the cause of death is pending, but the death is classified as a homicide.
