A self-proclaimed Christian prophet, who tried to prove that God would protect him from lions, was nearly eaten by the animals at Kruger National Park in South Africa.

According to South Africa’s Daily Post newspaper, Alec Ndiwane and a group of other church members were driving by a pride of lions in the park when he went into a trance and began speaking in tongues.

Ndiwane reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and ran toward the lions, who in response, attacked him.

He quickly realized there was no stopping the attack and began running back toward the vehicle. On his way back, one of the lions slashed his butt.

Ndiwane was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to save his left buttocks.

“I do not know what came over me,” Ndiwane told the Daily Post. “I thought the Lord wanted to use me to show his power over animals. Is it not we were given dominion over all creatures of the earth.”
