Former NC teacher pleads guilty to sex with student, gets probation
GASTONIA, N.C. — A former North Carolina high school teacher pleaded guilty to committing a sex act with a student.
Teika Helton, 46, of Belmont, accepted a plea offer and was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and two years of probation Tuesday, the Gaston Gazette reports.
Helton also agreed to give up her North Carolina teaching license.
Helton was charged in November 2015 with felony sex offense with a student. She claimed the sex act happened after the student’s graduation.
Investigators say the former student disputed Helton’s claim that the affair happened after his graduation.
The student’s mother reported to police that her son was involved in a sexual relationship with Helton prior to his graduation in June 2015, according to court documents.
Court documents say the victim, now a college student, later admitted the relationship to police.
The student and Helton engaged in a sex act in a car while parked in a Belmont development between May 18 and May 22, 2015, the Gazette reports.
His mother told police she learned of the sexual relationship after attending a UNC Charlotte football game with Helton in September, according to court documents.
Helton was interviewed by Gaston County police in October, when she admitted to having sexual relations with the former student. She also admitted to exchanging text messages that were sexual in nature with the student prior to his graduation, court documents said.
Helton resigned from her position at South Point High School in October after police began investigating.
In North Carolina, it is illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student no matter the student’s age.
