KINSTON, N.C. — A falsely accused North Carolina man has been released from prison after spending 25 years there.

WNCN reported that Howard Dudley was freed on Thursday after a Lenoir County judge reheard his case.

Dudley was convicted in 1992 and sentenced to life after his daughter claimed he molested her. She later retracted the story and the conviction was overturned this week.

Once the district attorneys dismiss Dudley’s charges, he will be available for up to $750,000 in compensation.

Howard said one of the first things he did after being released was visit his late mother and wife at the cemetery. Both died while he was in prison.
