BURLINGTON, N.C. -- A woman accused of stealing another woman’s purse inside a Burlington Walmart has been arrested.

Marjorie Jane Martin, 44, was charged Friday with one count each of misdemeanor larceny and financial card theft.

Burlington police said the crime happened at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 30 at the Walmart store on South Graham-Hopedale Road.

The purse had $100 in cash inside, along with the victim’s credit cards, social security card and family mementos.

“I have never been through anything like that in my life,” victim Beth Stephens, 62, previously told FOX8. “I used to be so trusting of people. She took more than my purse. She took my peace of mind, too.”

Stephens said police recovered all of the items from her purse, except the cash.

"I expected the cash to be gone," she said. "She can keep it. I have what I wanted back. Everything else was untouched. What can you say -- thank goodness for stupid criminals."

The suspect was arrested after authorities said she went to the Burlington Police Department and turned herself in after seeing her photo in the media.

She was placed in the Alamance County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
