GREENSBORO, N.C. — A simple traffic stop here on Feb. 5 turned out to be the biggest heroin bust ever by the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found almost 8 pounds of heroin stashed in the battery of a Ford F-250 driven by Atlanta resident Roman Camacho, said Lt. Chris Martin with the department’s special operations division. As Camacho’s demeanor changed during the traffic stop, deputies called for a K-9 unit who sniffed out the heroin.

Through Feb. 5, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office has seized 3,311 grams of heroin, up from about 347 grams seized in all of 2015, according to the agency’s records.

Greensboro police also seized more heroin during the last two years. Through Jan. 31, the department seized about 199 grams, said Capt. Rich Culler with Greensboro’s vice/narcotics division.
