NEW ORLEANS — Chris Daughtry has been cast to play a leading role in Fox’s live Biblical musical “The Passion.”

The North Carolina musician will play Judas, while singer-songwriter-actor Jencarlos Canela will play Jesus Christ, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It will be hosted and narrated by Tyler Perry.

“The Passion” will use popular music to tell the story of Jesus’ last hours on earth. The event takes place live on Palm Sunday (March 20) at locations in New Orleans.

Daughtry grew up in Lasker, N.C., near Roanoke Rapids and later relocated to McLeansville outside of Greensboro.

In 2006, Daughtry made it to the top four in American Idol before being eliminated, but ended up getting a record deal despite not winning.

In 2008, Daughtry’s band was nominated for a Grammy Award for best rock song. His hit songs include “Home” and “It’s Not Over.”
