BURLINGTON, N.C. — Police are searching for a suspect who crashed his vehicle while trying to flee a traffic stop in Burlington Thursday morning.

According to Burlington Police Sgt. Mike Grusky, a police officer stopped the vehicle at Mebane and Avon Avenue. As the officer approached the driver’s door, he saw that the driver had a handgun on his waistband and ordered the driver not to touch the weapon.

Police said the driver then sped away as the officer was standing beside the vehicle.

As the driver fled from the scene he hit a utility pole in the 800 block of Avon Avenue, causing power lines to fall onto the vehicle.

Burlington Police said the suspect then fled the scene of the crash, leaving behind two injured passengers.

The two passengers were taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries.

Duke Energy responded to the scene to make sure the power lines were safe.

The 800 block of Avon Avenue was closed for an hour while police conducted an investigation.

Officers are still working to identify and find the driver who fled the scene.
