ASHEBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Zoo will be closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday due to the upcoming storm, according to the zoo.

Gov. Pat McCrory declared a State of Emergency Thursday morning ahead of a major winter storm that is expected to hit the Piedmont-Triad around daybreak Friday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect for the Piedmont Triad at midnight. There will be some sleet and snow between 3 and 4 a.m. Friday and a wintry mix (snow/sleet/freezing rain) throughout the day.

The southern Piedmont could see the most ice out of this storm. Areas northwest of the Triad will likely see mostly snow with very little ice. All of this wraps up with snow on Saturday.

There should be less than a 1/4 inch of ice and between 3 and 6 inches of snow in the Triad.
