Randolph County deputies find nearly $300K worth of marijuana plants at man’s home

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Detectives with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after finding nearly 300 marijuana plants in his home.

Richard Kontout, 54, of 6028 Piedmont St. in Climax, was charged with two counts of trafficking marijuana and one count each of manufacturing marijuana; felony possession of a Schedule VI drug; possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a Schedule VI drug; maintaining a dwelling place for a controlled substance; and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

After searching his home, detectives said they found an indoor marijuana grow operation, which included 291 marijuana plants along with several items of grow equipment used in the process of manufacturing marijuana.

The approximate street value of the marijuana plants seized is $291,000.

Kontout is being held under a $250,000 secured bond.
