ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- Students at Dalton McMichael High School will have a spring break they will never forget.
“We're going to Disney World,” Alex Purgason said.
Last November, school resource officer Shane Woodall set up a Go Fund Me page to raise about $30,000 and send a class of exceptional students and their parents to Disney World over spring break.
Word spread and donations poured in.
“There were times where it had been shared thousands of times,” Woodall said.
But donations really took off during Christmas break.
“When we left for school we had $13,935. Dec. 18, that's when we got out for Christmas,” Woodall said.
Between then and now the total jumped to about $33,000.
Although the money for the trip has been raised, donations are still coming in.
Woodall plans to use the money to help fund additional meals traveling to and from Disney.
Any extra money that is not used for the trip will be used to fund the students’ prom in May.
Students Mary Reid and Stephanie Tucker expressed their excitement about the trip.
“I can hardly wait," Reid said.
“I am so excited to see Mickey Mouse. He's my favorite Walt Disney character,” Tucker said.
Woodall says he’s grateful for the more than 300 people who donated to give these students an incredible gift.
“That's one thing I want to do is thank everybody for what they’ve done,” Woodall said.
People and businesses have started separate fundraisers to help as well.
The students will take their trip to Disney March 28 through March 31.
