GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Diane Dunn knows what it's like to have to find a home. She was homeless once, and she's a veteran. Now, she is a case worker with the Salvation Army in Guilford County and is doing her part to help end veteran homelessness.

"The track that we are on right now is that it will happen; it will happen this year; it will happen sooner rather than later," said Darryl Kosciak, executive director of Partners Ending Homelessness in Greensboro.

Guilford County was one of 75 communities around the U.S. with the goal of housing all veterans by the end of 2015. Only two communities met the goal, Guilford County was not one of them, but it came close.  Last year local agencies identified 164 veterans who were homeless, and since then they've got 129 of them off the streets and into affordable apartments.

But there is still more work to be done, and more veterans for Dunn to meet and connect with landlords who have open apartments.

Multiple agencies in Guilford County now have a combined effort -- using federal grant money to find the homeless and get them into apartments.

"We know every single veteran who is currently homeless in the system, we know where they are and they are currently on a path to housing in some way, shape or form," Kosciak explained.

And with temperatures dropping outside, Dunn said now is the time to get every veteran off the street.

"If you have housing that is available as a landlord let someone know so that we can go ahead, get people housed [and] get them off the street. The weather is starting to change and now it's a really big push to get everybody housed," Dunn said.
