GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A Gaston County man was arrested after allegedly leaving his 2-year-old in a running vehicle with no heat for four hours Sunday night, according to WBTV.

Joshua Dale Smith, 31, is now facing child abuse charges.

Officials told WBTV that Smith showed, “reckless disregard for human life” by leaving his child in the car without heat in 40-degree weather.

When police arrived on the scene around 10 p.m., they said the child was emotionally withdrawn and wouldn’t talk.

WSOC reported that Smith called a relative to say that his car had broken down on Dallas-Cherryville Highway and he was walking away without the child. The relative then notified police.

Smith is being held on a $25,000 bond.
