WAUSAU, Wis. -- An unlikely escape and rescue saved two young turkeys from becoming Thanksgiving dinner.

The two turkeys fell off the back of a truck, found their way out of a crate and made a break for it.

Police were called to the unusual scene on State Highway 29 in Wausau Sunday morning.

"One turkey was pretty compliant, followed commands to get into the crate, the other turkey, he fled from them on foot," said Capt. Ben Bliven, of the Wausau Police Department.

For 15 minutes, the turkeys were chased and corralled until they were back in their cage.

The turkeys had been traveling in a truck to meet their untimely fate on a dinner plate.

Against all odds, they survived with minor injuries.

The turkeys are now recovering at the Raptor Education Group in Antigo and will live the rest of their lives eating instead of being eaten.
