DONIPHAN COUNTY, Kan. — An 8-year-old girl was killed when a vehicle she was driving crashed in northeast Kansas on Sunday afternoon, according to the St. Joseph News-Press.

Cadence Orcutt, 8, of Troy, Kan., was traveling west on 175th Road in a vehicle with her grandfather, Dennis Meers, 56, of St. Joseph, Mo., at about 3:45 p.m.

Kansas Highway Patrol told the News-Press that the young girl lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason, over-corrected, traveled off the roadway and ran down an embankment into a creek.

When emergency responders arrived on the scene, Cadence was dead. Meers was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Meers told Kansas Highway Patrol he had given the girl permission to drive.

The case will be turned over to the county attorney for consideration of charges.
