Stepfather, stepdaughter dead in apparent murder-suicide
TAMPA, Fla. — A Pasco County school nurse was shot and killed Monday morning while visiting her mother at Florida Hospital in north Tampa.
The gunman that shot her, later identified as her 70-year-old stepfather, then killed himself in an apparent murder-suicide, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said Alonna Tedesco, 41, received immediate attention from medical personnel after being shot but later died.
Her stepfather, Steven Eugene Reynolds, of Dade City, died at the scene.
“Initially, this does appear to be a murder-suicide,” said HCSO Col. Donna Lusczynski. “But it’s still early in the investigation.”
Lusczynski said the shooting happened just after 7 a.m. in a room on the hospital’s third floor, where Tedesco was visiting her mother, a patient with Alzheimer’s disease.
Deputies responded within two minutes, treating the scene as an active shooter incident. The room where the shootings occurred was immediately secured and no one in the hospital was in danger, according to Lusczynski.
“We identified where the threat was and that it was eliminated,” Lusczynski said of the sheriff’s office response. “And (then) secured the scene and make sure all the surrounding patients were OK.”
Deputies have not released a motive for the shooting, but they say the investigation is still very new.
“There is security footage throughout the hospital and we’re in the process of getting that,” Lusczynski
Pasco County Schools spokesperson Linda Cobbe said Tedesco, a registered nurse, had worked with the district since August and was the school nurse at Hudson high and middle schools.
“As much as this tragedy saddens the Pasco County Schools family, it also affects Mrs. Browning and me personally,” said Superintendent Kurt S. Browning.
“We have known Alonna for many years and are shocked to learn of her horrific passing. She was a good friend and a talented professional. Our thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family.”
Florida Hospital, located on East Fletcher Avenue near the University of South Florida, called the shootings an isolated incident.
“At this time Florida Hospital Tampa is open and caring for patients as scheduled today,” the hospital said in a released statement. “We are actively supporting the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office with their investigation. The isolated incident that occurred this morning did not involve our staff or patients.”
