NC teacher charged with sex with student; teacher claims affair was after graduation
GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A former Belmont teacher is charged with having sexual relations with a student, but she claims the affair was after the student’s graduation, according to the Gaston Gazette.
Teika Helton, 45, was charged Monday with felony sex offense with a student.
Investigators say the former student disputed Helton’s claim that the affair happened after his graduation, the Gazette reports.
The accuser’s mother reported to police that her son was involved in a sexual relationship with Helton prior to his graduation in June, according to court documents.
Court documents say the accuser, now a college student, later admitted the relationship to police.
His mother told police she learned of the sexual relationship after attending a UNC Charlotte football game with Helton in September, according to court documents.
Helton was interviewed by Gaston County police in October, when she admitted to having sexual relations with the former student. She also admitted to exchanging text messages that were sexual in nature with the student prior to his graduation, court documents said.
Helton resigned from her position at the high school in October after police began investigating.
In North Carolina, it is illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student no matter the student’s age.
