ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities are investigating after an inmate was found dead Sunday morning at the Alamance County Jail.

Kenneth Wayne Petty, 26, of Burlington, was found dead as detention officers were conducting security rounds at the jail at about 3:45 a.m.

A cause of death has not been released. The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said Petty was seen on his mattress in what originally appeared to be a normal manner.

But after a closer look, officers said they were unable to detect any vital signs. Additional officers responded with medical personnel and Petty was pronounced dead.

An internal review was begun, with the assistance of the Detective Division and, as per agency protocol the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was contacted. The SBI has been requested to conduct the death investigation.

Petty was booked into the detention center on Thursday on an order for arrest for failure to appear and was being held under a $500 secured bond, according to the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.
