GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A new online tool from the Better Business Bureau called "Scam Tracker" was recently launched to help people from falling victim to scams.

The database allows scam victims to report how and when they were scammed, how much money was lost and other information like a bogus company's name or phone number.

"This is a way for them to share that information with other individuals so other folks don't get ripped off," said Kevin Hinterberger, CEO of the BBB of Central North Carolina.

Hinterberger says the database is also helpful in situations where a scam artist or company hasn't been caught by police.

"A lot of times these folks that are scamming you are overseas," he said.

"It's an opportunity for people to report their experience in instances when local law enforcement isn't able to take action.”

Scam tracker lists information by zip code and by the type of scam.

Hinterberger says all the information in the database is posted by consumers for consumers.

"They can drill down and see what's going on in their local community," Hinterberger said.
