HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A High Point woman says she gave birth to her baby boy at home in her bathroom Wednesday morning.

It was a completely unplanned home delivery.

Monica Peace says by the time she realized her daughter Keyonna was in labor and called an ambulance, the baby was born.

“About 1:20 in the morning I heard [Keyonna] scream in the bathroom. I go rushing in and she’s standing at the sink holding onto the sink -- and the baby’s right there. I’m just trying to catch him and make sure he doesn’t hit the floor,” Peace said.

She said her daughter started having complications and what seemed like contractions Monday night. She says they went to the hospital and, after some tests, were assured everything was fine. They went home, but the contractions and back pain didn't go away.

The baby was three months early.

“It was just unbelievable. I was in shock because her baby’s not due until January. And so I was thinking from what they told us Monday that there’s no way she’s in labor. Then to walk in the bathroom and see that head? It was just unbelievable. I was just in shock. I’m still pretty much in shock!” she said.

Keyonna is doing well. Her son weighed only 2 lbs. 8 oz. He is at Brenner Children’s Hospital and Monica said he will have to stay a few months until he’s stronger.

She says other expecting mothers need to trust their instincts. “If something’s not right in your gut, get a second opinion.”
