GREENSBORO, N.C. -- In just a few weeks, developer Andy Zimmerman plans on gutting the inside of the former Lotus Lounge nightclub on West Lewis Street.

Zimmerman owns five buildings downtown and says his vision for the 13,000-square-foot building includes food and music.

“I think it would be a perfect venue for a city market type of venue,” Zimmerman said. “Jazz and blues and bluegrass and good listening music.”

Zimmerman decided to buy the building in September after the club’s owner announced he was selling the property.

The nightclub was shut down just days after a 19-year-old was shot and killed outside.

It was the third violent incident outside Lotus in less than a year.

Zimmerman says he wants to turn that bad ending into a fresh, new start.

“We’ve got a big parking lot here and we’ve got a brewery and some other great things happening on Lewis Street here and on the south side of town and we want to just add to that.”
