IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Twenty-one students and one adult were rushed to the hospital Saturday after the roof of the awning outside North Iredell High School’s front entrance collapsed and crashed down on them.

Three of the victims have serious injuries, according to Brady Johnson, superintendent of Iredell Statesville Schools.

“There were kids that witnessed this and are traumatized by what they saw,” Johnson said.

Around 3 p.m., a Ryder delivery truck hit a structural beam, causing the roof to collapse.

“Everybody was running all over the place like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off, screaming crying, everybody was all kinds of hurt nervous and everything,” said student Justin Cranfill who was inside the gym at the time.

Dozens of people were at the school for its annual regional band competition. Sixteen schools were invited but only four showed up due to bad weather.

Johnson says staff members will visit students at the hospital.

The school system is also working on getting a group of counselors together for students who may have been traumatized by what they witnessed.
