WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Vendors and visitors slogged their way through a rainy first day of the Dixie Classic Fair Friday.

The rain was around at 11 a.m. when gates opened and still going at 9 p.m. when the fair closed up early.

In between there were food competitions, exhibits, a demolition derby and live music that helped keep things moving despite a dreary day.

"They're die-hards that love the fair," said Mike Chambers, owner of Munchie Wagon who is starting his seventh year at the fairgrounds.

Chambers went all out to protect his kitchen at the fair. He laid down a tarp and then taped together floor tiles to give himself and kitchen workers something solid to stand on while preparing fried pork chop sandwiches, chicken pot pies and other items.

The solid flooring only covers part of the worry with this storm though. Chambers said he's heard screaming wind test the limits of his tent. Other vendors have lost their signage and cover to gusty winds.

Chambers calls the conditions "monsoonish" but is happy to have another eight days at the fair to help even out what has been a slow start.

A spokesman for the Dixie Classic Fair said an average of 32,000 people visit each day. He said rainy days with poor attendance almost always even out with stronger than average attendance when the weather dries out.

Gates are set to open on Saturday at the normal time of 9 a.m. Below is a schedule for the events.
