WILKESBORO, N.C. — Several members of a group in canoes and kayaks had to be rescued from the Yadkin River on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, emergency personnel were dispatched at about 3 p.m.
Two people were rescued from the river with throw ropes and two others were rescued by boat.
Kevin Heape, project manager at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir, told the Journal-Patriot additional water was released from the dam Wednesday to create storage capacity in the reservoir due to the forecast for substantial rain later this week.
Town officials and businesses that rent canoes are notified when additional water will be released, Heape said.
Those rescued from the river were examined by Wilkes EMS but did not require treatment.
