STATESVILLE, N.C. — A man is recovering after deputies say his wife shot him outside an elementary school in Statesville Tuesday afternoon, according to WBTV.
The shooting happened around 3 p.m. outside Central Elementary School.
A married couple and their 3-year-old drove to the school to pick up their oldest child. When the older child got into the truck, the wife pulled out a gun and shot her husband, according to deputies.
The older child then ran into the school looking for help.
The wife laid down the gun, then she and the other child went into the school.
The husband was found on the ground beside the family’s truck. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. There is no word on his condition.
Officers took the man’s wife in for questioning.
So far, no names have been released, but WBTV reported that the family was new to the school.
The shooting led to a lockdown at the school even though the school day had ended. Officials said about 75 students and staff members were in the school at the time of the shooting.
Although no students were injured, Sheriff Darren Campbell told WBTV that some students on the playground may have heard or seen the events unfold.
“Several of them, we don’t know exactly how many, were on the playground, which is sort of thirty yards from where the actual incident happened,” Campbell told WBTV. “But no children were hurt at the time. You know, we do have a few that we heard have said that they did hear the shots and did see some of it.”
Investigators have not released a possible motive for the shooting.
