GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A registered sex offender arrested Tuesday for being at Gibsonville Elementary School appeared in court Wednesday.

James Calvin Mitchell, 35, of Gibsonville, had his first appearance Wednesday at the Guilford County Courthouse.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Mitchell was still in jail under a $1,000 secured bond.

His next court date is set for Oct. 28.

Gibsonville Chief of Police Ron Parrish said a concerned parent called about Mitchell which led to their investigation and patrol around Gibsonville Elementary School.

"On Sept. 16, a concerned parent went to a teacher at the elementary school and advised that they saw a sex offender on the property during open house, which was Aug. 21," Parrish said.

Parrish said the parent also had a picture of Mitchell that they used in a lineup to identify him.

"He was a passenger in an automobile that was on the property with his girlfriend and she has kids that go to this school," Parrish said. "Anytime we're conducting an investigation, the last thing that we would want to do is to put that information out there that this is what we’re doing. Had that happened, the likelihood of catching him on the property would probably be slim to none and it, maybe, would have never happened. "

There are 890 registered sex offenders in Guilford County.
