ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- A local woman is asking for an unusual gift for her birthday this year -- blood.

Mitzi Evans is asking friends, family and co-workers to donate blood on her behalf on her 55th birthday Sept. 30.

Evans was diagnosed with breast cancer in April.

Because of chemotherapy, she’s no longer able to donate.

Evans has been an avid donor for more than 20 years.

Through social media and a letter sent to hundreds of county employees, Evans has started a campaign to get her birthday wish out to as many people as possible.

“I asked the Lord when I first found out to use me,” Evans said. “Hopefully he will.”

The American Red Cross blood drive will be held on Sept. 30 at the Rockingham County Governmental Center.
