It was a violent weekend in Charlotte — five people are dead after multiple shootings. One of the victims was a 7-year-old boy.

The homicides span from east Charlotte to southwest Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Deputy Chief Jeff Estes held a news conference Sunday morning about the violence in the past 24 hours in Charlotte. Estes said it’s been a trying weekend for his officers and the Charlotte community. In all, 11 people were shot.

The latest shooting happened Sunday night on Effingham Road, police said. One person was shot and has potentially life-threatening injuries.

Estes said they do not know if any of the shootings are related. He also said high-powered assault rifles were used in one or more of these shootings.
