CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton is addressing a so-called “gang photo” that he posted recently to Instagram and says it’s not what some people think.

The Charlotte Observer reported that the Carolina Panthers quarterback posted a photo of himself and some friends to social media earlier this week.

The photo shows Newton throwing up some letters with his hands with friends wearing bandannas covering their faces. It was reportedly taken during a trip to Mexico in May.

“Is this the ‘Panthers Crips, or Bloods?'” responded one commenter.

But Newton said he was holding up a “W” with his hands to represent his high school alma mater, Westlake High in Atlanta.

He posted another photo the next day that shows him and his friends in suits.

With the second image, he posted the quote, “I know where I’m going and I know the truth, and I don’t have to be what you want me to be. I’m free to be what I want.”
