GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said a 16-year-old died during the first soccer practice of the season.

The coroner said Titus Martin Jr. collapsed suddenly on the field at Legacy Charter High School on East Bramlett Road around 6:45 p.m. Monday.

Coaches and other school personnel administered medical attention immediately.

Parker Fire Department and Greenville County EMS responded and transported Martin to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy. An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday.

A friend told FOX Carolina that Martin was the goalie during practice. He was standing still when he collapsed, she said. Martin was a junior at Legacy High School.

School officials released the following statement about Martin’s passing:

Titus Martin was an exceptional, sober and kind young man and student. He wore a smile everyday that brightened up the days of his family and school family at Legacy. I was with the family yesterday and this is obviously tragic for them; the Legacy Charter School grieves with them. We are bringing in additional support for students and staff during this difficult time. He will be dearly missed and remembered as a wonderful young man.
