DUNN, N.C. — A babysitter is in jail after two young children she was hired to watch wandered out of their home and across a busy road in Dunn, according to WRAL.

Brittani Lynette Brooks, 25, of Spring Lake, was charged with misdemeanor child abuse.

The children, a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old, were found at a nearby gas station at the intersection of U.S. Highway 421 and Erwin Road.

When police returned them to their home on Erwin Road they had to ring the doorbell several times, pound on the door and shout before the babysitter answered.

Brooks had apparently fallen asleep in the house when the children left.

She was placed in the Harnett County jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
