WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Nikon and his handler, Officer Karen Simmons, started their careers together in the canine unit seven years ago.

Nikon, a 9-year-old Czech Shepard, died during stomach surgery on Thursday.

Simmons said Nikon retired last month but had started to get sick in the last couple of weeks.

“He couldn’t keep any food down, so I took him to the vet and they did an exploratory surgery and found a hernia at the bottom of his esophagus,” she said. “They got that straightened out, but before they could close him up, his heart stopped.”
