NEW YORK — A New York teenager was indicted on second-degree murder charges after her newborn baby was found dead in a bag on Thursday, according to WABC.

Tiona Rodriguez, 18, was caught shoplifting from a Victoria’s Secret in Manhattan when security noticed she was acting suspicious and smelled a foul odor.

When security searched the bag they found her newborn baby’s body.

The medical examiner ruled that the baby died from asphyxiation, according to WABC.

Rodriguez had given birth to the child at her friend’s home the day before and brought the baby with her to the store in a bag, police told WABC.

“There is perhaps no victim more defenseless than a newborn child,” District Attorney, Cy Vance, said. “The baby’s body was only discovered after his mother was questioned by a store security officer who suspected her of theft. I am confident that the experienced homicide and child abuse prosecutors in my office will see that justice is served in this tragic case.”
