LENOIR, N.C. — A teenager from North Carolina has written a letter praising the city of Detroit that has quickly gone viral.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Cassie Mattheis,16, of Lenoir, N.C., recently went on a trip to the Motor City as part of a national church youth gathering.

Detroit was far from the dark and scary place she originally thought it may have been. In fact, she fell in love with the city.

The teen published a blog called “A Letter To Detroit From A National Youth Gathering Participant,” in which she explains her positive experience there.

“I was expecting a city filled with broken dreams and shattered glass, a city devoid of life and hope,” Mattheis wrote. “I expected a scene of desolation against the backdrop of a dead city.

But you are not dead. You are so very much alive. You destroyed all of my preconceptions the minute I set foot on your gorgeous river walk and was exposed to the cultural diversity and breathtaking views you offered me.”
